Negative space drawing is a key drawing skill for artists. You concentrate on all of the spaces and shapes between and around objects, and eventually the object itself magically appears. Seeing in this way is like turning a switch off in one part of your brain and turning another switch on. Eventually it becomes automatic, and actually makes drawing what you see a lot easier. But like a muscle, this skill takes a little while to build up. The children found it really frustrating and confusing at first. But they bravely persevered. The drawings of a stool they did by the end of class show they are beginning to master this key skill. I know they will find this skill invaluable over time.
